Episode 61: How Your Small Business Can Standout in a Sea of Sameness

How can you make your small business standout? Easy- niche! Niche, niche, niche! That's The Decorettes' Core Value #3! Now there's one wrong way to establish your niche (because it's fake), but we're giving you three ways that you can develop a niche (style, method, and audience) that will help you standout and attract the perfect clients and customers for your business that are willing to pay your premium fees!

As a creative business owner there is just too much to do that we often get overwhelmed and stuck in analysis paralysis- what should we do next that will make the most impact? This week on the show, The Decorettes are walking you you through three small steps you can take to improve your business, including clarifying your message with StoryBrand, improving your systems with templates, and implementing small brand upgrades to attract premium clients. Just take a few small steps here and there and you'll reap huge rewards in your small business.

Topics Discussed:

  • Problem: Have you noticed that lately, there are a whole lot of businesses that look the same. And seem to do exactly the same thing. When a potential client can’t tell the difference between what one brand does between another, you know what the determining factor will be? Price! And that will leave us broke. As Marie Forleo says, when your marketing to everybody your marketing to nobody.

  • And that is why The Decorettes Core Value #3 is niching! And we’re going to tell you three great ways to niche, and one way not to.

  • Let’s first talk about the cardinal sin of niching: the fake niche.

    • There’s a reason Steph doesn’t market myself as a brand strategist for interior designers.

    • When you look at all that she does (clarifying marketing messages, captivating with visuals, and designing websites that convert) this is not unique to interior designers. It’s how all small businesses need to market. This is what we like to call, a faux niche.

    • But let’s take Jess. She works with interior designers on their systems. Because interior designers have a very specific set of needs, like ordering, and invoicing, and vendor management. Can she eventually branch out to other service-based businesses, yes. But right now, her offerings are a true niche.

  • How to niche #1: Your style

    • Anyone in a creative field is going to have a style

    • Jess: Colorful, playful, eclectic, mix of vintage and modern. I don’t so shabby chic or tuscan etc...

    • Steph: Our visuals are strong and bold, and can lean either feminine or masculine if needed. But people aren’t going to come to us for watercolors or anything light and airy. Our brand visuals are strong, because the small businesses we work with are strong.

  • How to niche #2: Your method

    • Are you certified in something?

    • Green design?

    • Universal design?

    • Any particular method that’s marketable?

    • Maybe you just  source from local tradesmen and artisans.

    • Your niche can also be your special system- how you get results differently than others.

  • How to niche #3: Who you serve

    • Small business owners have different needs for marketing than Fortune 500 companies.

    • Jet-setting executives often have different design needs than a retired couple looking to design their forever home.

    • Families have different needs than bachelors

  • Niching magic? Combine a couple of these (or all three) to really stand out and get noticed.

  • Will you repel some people, yes. And you want to. But you’ll also attract the types of clients that are begging for what you have!
